From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. If Argentina thought that would have it easy against Switzerland, they were wrong. They needed a late extra-time winner from Angel di Maria to win.

Much like the Round of 16 match involving Germany and Algeria, the heavily favoured side didn't have things all their own way and also like last nthat game, this one went to extra-time.

With the game looking set to be the third Round of 16 match to go to penalties, Lionel Messi went on a surging run through midfield before laying the ball to Di Maria whose low first time shot was beyond the keeper's reach.

Switzerland pushed for an equaliser and Blerim Džemaili had time for a moment that will haunt him forever. Just a couple of yards out and unmarked, he headed against the post before the rebound hit his leg and went just wide of the post.
