Round-up: Naylor to bounce back after nightmare day

It was quite the day for Newport’s Tom Naylor – but not for reasons he would have liked. The defender, on loan from Derby County, scored two own goals and conceded a penalty in a nightmare display as Morecambe won 3-2 in their League Two fixture at Rodney Parade.

Both of the own goals were wayward headers, before he fouled Kevin Ellison in the box to concede the winning goal, which Padraig Amond converted. Naylor’s manager, Justin Edinburgh, however, gave him his backing. “It’s been one of those days,” Edinburgh said. “He’s been excellent for us since he’s arrived. Everything that could go wrong went wrong today. Good players bounce back and get stronger from that and I have no doubt that’s what he’ll do because he’s a very good player. Naylor, 22, wrote on Twitter after the match: “Sorry about today people!.. Hopefully I can make up for it next week!.. #bounceback.”

Ince sorry for bottle job

Blackpool’s manager Paul Ince has apologised after a bottle that he threw during his side’s 2-1 Championship victory over Bournemouth accidentally hit a female Blackpool supporter. Ince was sent to the stands for the incident – a frustrated reaction to his side missing a late chance – but Tangerines’ assistant coach Alex Rae said Ince apologised immediately to the fan, which she accepted. “We thought [Ince being sent from the dug-out] was harsh because it [the bottle] bounced through a barrier,” Rae said. “To be fair, the manager went over and apologised to the lady immediately as it actually hit her on the foot, I think, and she’s accepted his apology.” The win keeps Blackpool top of the Championship, ahead of Queens Park Rangers, who beat Birmingham 1-0, on goal difference.

Rovers take derby draw

In the 100th competitive east Lancashire derby, Burnley came within five minutes of their first victory over rivals Blackburn in 34 years, but Jordan Rhodes (right) struck five minutes from time to secure a 1-1 draw for 10-man Rovers at Turf Moor. Junior Stanislas had put Burnley ahead, but Rhodes capitalised on a comedy of errors from Burnley’s defence to equalise – Michael Duff’s clearance ricocheting off the striker’s shin, causing the ball to loop over goalkeeper Tom Heaton. In stoppage time, Rovers’ substitute Lee Williamson was dismissed for chopping down Danny Ings on the half-way line. Burnley’s manager Sean Dyche was still in shock at the fortuitous nature of Rhodes’ goal after the match. “The way it’s gone in is truly incredible,” Dyche said. “It could bounce anywhere and it happens to spin over your goalkeeper.”

Derby hit Lions for five

Millwall’s dreadful start to the season continued after they were thrashed 5-1 by Derby County at The Den. Craig Bryson scored a hat-trick in the rout to put even more pressure on the home side’s manager Steve Lomas, his side now bottom of the Championship with four defeats and two draws from their first six matches.

O’s perfect start continues

League One leaders Leyton Orient maintained their perfect start to the season with a 3-2 home victory over Port Vale. Veteran striker Kevin Lisbie fired home the winner with two minutes remaining to make it six wins out of six for the O’s.

Prenton Park thriller

Brentford ran out 4-3 winners in dramatic fashion at Tranmere. Cole Stockton’s equaliser in injury time looked to have given Rovers a draw at Prenton Park, before Adam Forshaw stepped up to score a 93rd-minute penalty to secure a thrilling victory for Brentford.

Genoa ban spy coach

A coach from Serie A side Genoa was caught spying on local rivals Sampdoria dressed in camouflage gear before their derby today. Luca De Pra, a Genoa youth-team coach, was suspended by his club after being caught hiding in the bushes at Sampdoria’s training ground. “No director or member of the coaching staff sent Luca De Pra to watch the training session. It was a personal initiative,” Genoa said in a statement. “This has never been done before. The club makes it known that De Pra has been suspended with immediate effect pending further explanations.”
