The Football League poll, run by 4-4-2, has largely confirms the results of The Independent’s annual listing of the best footballers outside the Premier League. The Independent excludes players over 30, and includes SPL footballers. Bearing those provisos in mind the League poll followed ours in selecting Michael Kightly as the best player under 30 in the Football League, and Jermaine Beckford and Keith Andrews as the best in Leagues One and Two.
The Independent also included Jon Greening, James Beattie, Zolten Gera, Ricardo Fuller, Joe Ledley, Jonathan Walters, Brian Howard, Marvin Elliott, Akos Buzacky and Felipe Texiera in its top 20. Marlon King was the only English-based player to make the Independent’s top ten who did not feature in the League
