Championship round-up: Surman and Fraser put Bournemouth at the summit

Bournemouth took full advantage of Watford’s shock defeatto move to the top of the Championship with a 2-0 win over 10-man Sheffield Wednesday.

The home side managed to hold out against Eddie Howe’s (pictured) free-scoring team for an hour but the sending off of Royston Drenthe for his second booking changed the game. Five minutes later Andrew Surman put Bournemouth ahead and soon afterwards Ryan Fraser rounded off slick counter-attack with a 20-yard shot.

Wolves slipped up against former manager Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich, Daryl Murphy scoring both the home side’s goals in a 2-1 win. Ipswich took the lead through Murphy’s superb curling shot from the edge of the area 10 minutes before half time. Yet they were pegged back soon after the restart when keeper Bartosz Bialkowski allowed James Henry’s cross to creep in at the far post. However Murphy restored Ipswich’s lead in the 59th minute after being set up by David McGoldrick.

Derby returned to winning ways after two straight league defeats by beating in-form Huddersfield 3-2. Jordon Ibe gave them an early lead only for Harry Bunn to capitalise on hesitant defending to draw Hudderfield level 15 minutes later. The home side regained the lead on the stroke of half-time, Chris Martin had a close-range shot saved and Jonny Russell snapped up the rebound. Substitute Simon Dawkins made the game safe with a shot from the edge of the area with 13 minutes to go before Mark Hudson pulled one back for Huddersfield.

Cardiff’s revival under new manager Russell Slade came to a halt at Bolton, Neil Lennon’s side winning 3-0 through two Liam Feeney goals and a Matt Mills header. Feeney’s first was a curling shot from 15 yards after Darren Pratley’s surge into the box, the second was also set up by Pratley for a far-post header.

The highly-rated Alex Mowatt scored both Leeds goals with superb chips in the 2-2 draw with Charlton.
