Burton O'Brien was denied a spectacular stoppage-time winner for Sheffield Wednesday when his shot hit the post in this South Yorkshire derby. The Tykes goalkeeper Luke Steele also made a decisive save to keep out another long-range piledriver from Owls substitute Ben Sahar to ensure that Brian Laws' side remained in the Championship bottom three.
O'Brien's 30-yard thunderbolt in the third minute of time added on came back off the woodwork, while FA Cup hero Steele caught Sahar's stinging drive at full stretch shortly after Laws had sent on the Chelsea teenager in a bid to break the stalemate.
Barnsley were not without their own chances, with Jon Macken twice going close in the first half as Simon Davey's FA Cup quarter-finalists dominated the early exchanges.
Barnsley went down to 10 men when defender Rob Kozluk was sent off for his second bookable offence when his sliding lunge caught Wednesday striker Marcus Tudgay.
Kozluk had already been booked in the first half for another foul on the striker.
Barnsley manager Simon Davey admitted: "It was a sending off. I don't think he misses the Chelsea [FA Cup quarter-final] game. I am not going to have a go at Rob." The Wednesday manager, Brian Laws, said: "The biggest element today was the wind. It became a bit of a scrap, it's a local derby and a lot of pride was shown."
