Manchester United progressed to the FA Cup quarter-finals thanks to a 1-0 win over West Ham, though they needed extra time to do so on Tuesday night.

Mason Greenwood saw an early shot blocked and Nemanja Matic fired over from range, as the home side dominated the early stages without creating any true clear chances. The Hammers struggled to get out of their own half and lost centre-back Angelo Ogbonna to injury in the opening 15 minutes.

Victor Lindelof was then denied by Lukasz Fabianski and Donny van de Beek steered an effort over as the game remained goalless at the break, with Fabianski also called into action just after the restart to save from Marcus Rashford in a one-on-one.

Both teams made changes to try and push for a winner as the game went on - though the Hammers' were often enforced due to injury - but it finished 0-0 and went to extra time. A rare moment of pace and intent saw United net the vital opener, with Scott McTominay putting the finishing touch on a counter-attack to send his side through.

Here are the player ratings from the match at Old Trafford.

Man United

Dean Henderson - 7. Not much more than an onlooker for the first half; made a couple of decent aerial claims after the break. This wasn't exactly much of a test for him.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 5. Made a tackle or two but this was largely a lethargic showing. One poor attempted clearance almost looped into his own top corner.

Victor Lindelof - 6. Almost scored a first-half header. Caused a few difficult moments with poor use of the ball.

Harry Maguire - 7. Struggled up against Yarmolenko the few occasions the stand-in forward got the ball. Comfortable after the Ukrainian departed and dealt well with defending set pieces.

Alex Telles - 7. A good outlet for United and put some dangerous balls into the box.

Fred - 6. Combative and energetic but didn't have too much impact in attacking play.

Nemanja Matic - 5. Quiet game in midfield and replaced for the closing stages.

Mason Greenwood - 6. Good in individual moments but lacked the final pass.

Donny van de Beek - 6. Struggled to get into the game in the first half. A few good runs which went unspotted, but mostly on the periphery.

Marcus Rashford - 5. Lacked the incisive pass in build-up play and spurned a huge chance to score the opener one-on-one.

Anthony Martial - 6. Made plenty of positive runs which weren't always spotted. Little impact on the game in the second half.

West Ham

Lukasz Fabianski - 8. A big save from Rashford just after the restart and good footwork throughout.

Vladimir Coufal - 6. A typical performance in defensive terms, solid and aggressive, though didn't get forward often and switched to playing centre-back in a three after the break.

Craig Dawson - 8. Commanding at the heart of a defence which seemed to change every 15 minutes. Cut out crosses and made plenty of clearances.

Angelo Ogbonna - 6. Made a good challenge on Martial but got injured doing so, less than a quarter of an hour in - then his replacement, Issa Diop, was subbed at the break with concussion.

Aaron Cresswell - 7. A few early forays forward, but mostly employed in a defensive capacity. Ended up as a centre-back and fared well against United's narrow attack.

Declan Rice - 7. Mostly impressive on and off the ball. Didn't power forward as he's capable of but kept his team moving when he could. Lost control of the ball in the lead-up to United's goal, though there was a lot of ground covered between his touch and McTominay's.

Mark Noble - 6. Kept the ball moving well though didn't have the physicality to compete in ground duels with Matic and Fred.

Jarrod Bowen - 4. Seemed to be constantly heading down blind alleys and was subbed at the break.

Tomas Soucek - 6. Played further forward than usual but didn't really have an influence on proceedings.

Pablo Fornals - 4. A largely anonymous showing. Spurned a great chance to put his team in three-on-two midway through the second half.

Andriy Yarmolenko - 5. His hold-up play was fairly poor, though he had very little support from deep. Worked hard but picked up an injury early in the second half.
