Biggest wins in English football: Was Manchester City’s 9-0 victory over Burton Albion a League Cup record?

Pep Guardiola’s side crushed their League One opponents to all-but-guarantee their place in the Carabao Cup final

Gabriel Jesus scored four goals as holders Manchester City powered towards a return to the Carabao Cup final with a ruthless 9-0 demolition of League One side Burton Albion at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite still having the second leg to negotiate at the Pirelli Stadium in under a fortnight, City look home and dry unless Burton can pull off arguably the biggest upset British football has ever seen, having displayed their superiority in brutal fashion on Wednesday night.

The landslide victory led many to ask if it was the biggest victory seen in domestic professional football on these shores, and incredibly sees City take their goal tally in their last two games to a remarkable 16.

But not only is it not the biggest win in history, it is not even the largest in the League Cup.

Here, we take a look at some of the biggest winning margins in the history of English football.

Liverpool 10 Fulham 0 - September 1986

Kenny Dalglish's team went one better than Pep Guardiola's in the League Cup second round with Steve McMahon scoring four times. The Reds reached the final but lost to Arsenal.

West Ham United 10 Bury 0 – 25 October 1983

Back when the second round was a two-leg affair, West Ham set what was then the biggest win seen in the League Cup.

Manchester United 9 Ipswich 0 - March 1995

Andy Cole scored five goals as Sir Alex Ferguson's team recorded their biggest Premier League win but the title went to Blackburn.

Tottenham 9 Wigan 1 - November 2009

Jermain Defoe found the net five times as Spurs recorded their biggest Premier League victory. Amazingly, the score was only 1-0 at half-time.

Newcastle 8 Sheffield Wednesday 0 - September 1999

Alan Shearer got his name on the list of players to score five times in a Premier League match when the Magpies clipped the Owls' wings at the turn of the century.

Middlesbrough 8 Man City 1 - May 2008

Sven-Goran Eriksson's final game as City boss ended with a humbling by Middlesbrough as Afonso Alves scored a hat-trick in a Premier League rout at the Riverside.

But while Manchester City failed to set a new record for the biggest win in League Cup history, they could yet surpass the existing landmark for an aggregated match, which Liverpool currently hold with their 13-2 victory over Fulham that came via 10-0 and 3-2 victories in 1986, with the 11-goal winning margin also shared by West Ham, Watford and Everton.
