From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Jose Mourinho has won every title there is to win in four different European leagues, but he said he now wants to remain in England for the rest of his career.

“I will stay here, in this chair, until Mr Abramovich tells me ‘Jose, it’s enough’,” he said. “If one day he tells me ‘Jose it’s enough’ I will go to my house in London and wait for another English club.

“When I left Chelsea the first time, I had lots of countries to go to and lots of clubs to go to. When I leave (here), I will have the other 19 clubs in the Premier League and 24 in the Championship, that’s it.”

Mourinho had wildly successful spells at Internazionale and Real Madrid in his six-year hiatus from Chelsea but also endured difficult relationships with the media in both countries. Only in England are the media and wider public so enamoured by him.

But his love of English football has, he said, been tested by controversies over bans for Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic.

“I’m a bit disappointed, yes.” he said. “I love English football. I would not change my feelings about it. My desire to work for Chelsea has not changed, [it is] exactly the same. But in this moment, I am disappointed. Maybe in two, three or four months, I might change my feelings.”

Matic will miss today’s Capital One Cup final because of a two-match suspension for pushing Burnley’s Ashley Barnes, an angry reaction to a reckless challenge that Mourinho has called “criminal” and potentially “career ending”.

The Chelsea manager said: “I don’t even know if he’s allowed to go to the dressing room after the crime he committed, by reacting the way he did, by pushing a player. I don’t know if he’s allowed to go to Wembley. I don’t know the rules.”

In Matic’s place will be the Brazilian Ramires, who has seen his first-team opportunities all but dry up in the last 12 months.

“He was marginalised by an injury that took three or four months to disappear. That’s why he wasn’t playing regularly. Obviously he’s going to play on Sunday,” Mourinho said.

Whatever the result of today’s match, Chelsea will train tomorrow and face Paris St-Germain at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, with the Champions League last 16 tie level at 1-1. Mourinho said he always wants English clubs to succeed in Europe, but after Arsenal and Manchester City lost to Monaco and Barcelona, he rejected the idea that only Chelsea has a realistic chance of progressing.

“Liverpool and Tottenham are out. All the others are not,” he said. “Arsenal is in, Man City is in, Everton is obviously in, Chelsea is in. Nobody is in the quarter-final. Our result is an open result. 1-1 away is not bad, but it’s a risky result. I don’t feel we are in a safe position for that.”
