Manchester City must overturn a 3-0 deficit in the Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool or risk yet another European failure under Pep Guardiola, after enduring one of their worst week’s since the manager took over last season.

Having been roundly blown away by Liverpool in last week’s first leg, City then managed to lose the Manchester derby 3-2 against fierce rivals United, despite taking an early 2-0 lead, to prevent them from securing the Premier League title. With their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread, another defeat tonight at the Etihad Stadium will raise serious concerns about this current side.

Liverpool will need to prove that they can recreate the type of performance that decimated City last week away from Anfield though, with Jürgen Klopp’s side facing their own test after securing such an impressive victory. With doubts over star player Mohamed Salah’s fitness, Klopp will hope to see a defensive shutout to guarantee Liverpool’s progression to the semi-finals for the first time since 2008.

We all remember what happened last time these two sides met at the Etihad, don't we?

Y'know, when Sadio Mane was sent off for a karate kick on Ederson and City thrashed the Reds 5-0.

What Pep Guardiola would give for a repeat of that result tonight...

Pre-match words from both managers

Pep Guardiola on his offensive team selection:

"We have to attack. We need to score goals. We have players with quality up front and Fernandinho can play as a central defender."

Jurgen Klopp on City's line-up:

"If you see the line-up of City. It's a statement. Nice and offensive. It will be exciting, it will be a big one. They will try everything - but so will we."

Glenn Hoddle hasn't been too impressed with City's fans so far tonight.

"There's no energy in here like I thought there would be. They [the supporters] have got to be a twelfth man here.

"If City are going to get a result here, they've got to take the roof off."

Pep Guardiola has had this to say about Manchester City's struggles over the last week:

"I think this is the first time this season when we've had two bad games in a row, which is good.

"One of the capacities these players have is that they never give up. They are sad but in the bad moments you have to be there for them, I am in front of them.

"I never drop them. I was there, I know how they suffer because they want to do well.

"There is no one here who thinks we cannot do it. The amount of chances we create. There have always been and will be a lot of amazing comebacks in all sports."
