Klopp speaks of his 'relief' after Liverpool's Champions League win

Mohamed Salah has revealed he drew inspiration from a picture of his early exit from the 2018 Champions League final before helping Liverpool to victory in Madrid.

Jürgen Klopp’s side were crowned champions of Europe on Saturday night with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, with Divock Origi adding to Salah’s early penalty.

Salah felt he had a point to prove after dislocating his shoulder in the Kiev final last year, while contesting for the ball with Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos. Liverpool went on to lose 3-1.

The Egyptian was in tears as he was substituted that night, but he returned to that moment before walking out at the Wanda Metropolitano.

“I looked at the picture from last year before the game,” he revealed. “We were a little bit disappointed after the final and now we are back and have won it again, the sixth time for Liverpool, it is something great.”

Asked what he felt when he looked back on his Kiev injury, Salah said: “Disappointment. I was very disappointed that I got injured and went out after 30 minutes and we lost the game. It was something to motivate me to win today.

“I didn't look at the picture for a long time. You can feel what you can beat you so I just looked at it one time and said 'OK, let's go'.

“I do [believe in fate]. Yeah, of course. Absolutely. Our job is more mental and you have to believe I yourself before the game.

“You could see the players; we were believing in ourselves in the game. I think everything happens for a reason and the reason for us to lose the final last season was to come back and win it again.”

Saturday night marked the first trophy of Klopp’s tenure at the club, and Salah added that this should only be the start of a successful era in Liverpool’s history.

“With Liverpool, the Champions League. Something special. The first trophy and it's the Champions League! It's the start. It's the first competition,” he said.

“We will go next season for the Premier League. This season was the first season we were really fighting for the Premier League, last season we were basically fighting for the Champions League.

“The average age is 26/27 so we still have young players. It is good experience for us to win the trophy now and also last season we learned a lot.”
