Real Madrid are not planning to appoint Jose Mourinho, says the Spanish club's president Florentino Perez.

The Portuguese coach was quickly linked with a return to the Bernabeu following his dismissal by Chelsea. That was fuelled by a succession of tweets by former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon suggesting it was likely to happen.

"Mou is closer to Madrid," he posted via his official Twitter account, before later adding: "Only a few things to sort out and he'll be here.

"Without a doubt the best news for [Florentino] Perez in the most difficult situation he has had as president. I couldn't find a better shield."

He later added: "Just for everyone to know. I've given my personal opinion in Mou's case. Not talking on behalf of anyone else."

Later, Perez denied Mourinho would be replacing Real Madrid's current manager Rafa Benitez.

"Nobody can predict the future but right now he is not going to come to Madrid," he said.

5 games that cost Mourinho his job

With Benitez at the helm, Madrid have struggled lately and stand five points behind co-leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the Primera Division.

"Benitez is capable of solving the problems we have," said Perez. "That's the only option we're considering.

"We have very good memories of Mourinho, he raised our competitive level (when he was manager)."

Mourinho had three years in charge at the Bernabeu, during which time he led them to one league title, before leaving in 2013.
