Paris Saint-Germain have overtaken Manchester United in the race to sign Jose Mourinho as their next manager after they made an official approach to his agent, according to bookmakers’.

Sky Sports News reported on Tuesday that PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi contacted Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes, to discuss him replacing Laurent Blanc as PSG manager following the Champions League exit at the hands of Manchester City.

The news will have United fans concerned that their club could miss out on Mourinho, with tensions between supporters and Louis van Gaal close to breaking point as United sit on the cusp of a second failure to finish inside the top four in three years.

Progression to the FA Cup semi-finals has eased the criticism of Van Gaal somewhat, but doubts remain over whether he will be in the dugout come next season, and with Mourinho out of work it appeared to be a given that the Portuguese would take over in the summer.

But the odds of that have changed dramatically after the news of PSG’s approach broke, and the French league champions are now even favourites to land the former Chelsea manager. United, who were 2/5 favourites before today, have drifted to 5/4, while Real Madrid remain 4/1 outsiders.

BetVictor spokesman Charlie McCann said: “Many people were convinced that Mourinho would replace Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford at the end of the season but in recent days the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss has been increasingly linked with the French capital and now PSG are, indeed, favourites to be his next appointment; it could be some tug-of-war in the summer if both PSG and United have Mourinho as their chosen one but we just favour PSG over Old Trafford at present.”

Winning the league title in a division where it is almost a given that a team with PSG’s riches will succeed is no longer enough to satisfy the Parisians ambitious owners, and the lack of progression in Europe is said to be behind their approach to Mourinho.

The 53-year-old is set to hold out in order to try and land the United job should Van Gaal be sacked this summer, but in PSG he could have a useful fall-back option to get back into management. Mourinho has already turned down PSG twice in the past, but despite Blanc having two years left to run on his contract, it appears his recent failure in Europe could end his reign at the Parc des Princes.

Jose Mourinho shakes head when asked about Man Utd job

The Independent understands that United have not made an official offer to Mourinho to replace Van Gaal and will see how the rest of the season plays out before deciding whether or not to replace him, with the Dutchman having one year left to run on his contract. United’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, has shown a determination to stick with Van Gaal during runs of poor form this season in an apparent show of unity with the manager, but failure to finish in the top four this season will likely end Van Gaal’s reign due to the financial implications of a second season in three years outside of the Champions League would cause.
