Frank de Boer has been sacked as Inter Milan manager after only 14 games in charge of the Serie A club.

The Inter board decided to terminate de Boer’s contract following the club’s 1-0 defeat to Sampdoria last weekend which saw the Italian giants drop to 12th in the Serie A table.

de Boer, who was linked heavily with moves to Everton and Southampton this summer, spent just 85 days at the helm and after only managing to secure four wins out of a possible 14 games during his time at the San Siro, the club have ended his tenure in charge this afternoon.

The former Netherlands international will be temporarily replaced by youth team coach Stefiano Vecchi who will take charge of the side for their upcoming Europa League against Southampton at St.Marys.

de Boer took over from former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini in the summer after leading Ajax to four successive Eredivisie titles but left the club after losing out on last year’s championship to PSV Eindhoven on the final day of the season.

In spite of his success in Holland, de Boer failed to find similar success in Italy where a poor start to this campaign saw pressure begin to mount on the former Barcelona star. Unfortunately time ran out for the Dutchman who was sacked mere days after their disappointing defeat to Sampdoria.

In a final farewell message to the Inter fans, de Boer tweeted:"to carry out this project needed more time". de Boer has become the eighth manager in six years to leave the club since Jose Mourinho’s departure in 2010.

Inter, who have finished in the Serie A top four on one occasion during the past five years, have struggled to secure any silverware since their incredible treble season back in 2010/11 and face a considerable challenge ahead if they are to reach the summit of Italian football again.

Former Lazio manager Stefano Pioli, Marcelo Bielsa and ex Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas are the early front runners to become de Boer’s replacement.
