Liverpool were rightly beaten by FC Basel on Wednesday night after a poor performance at St Jakob-Park.

Mario Balotelli had just one shot on goal and no touches in the box but at least tried to make something happen for the Reds.

Brendan Rodgers criticised his team's 'poor' defending after the match and Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren again struggled to form a solid partnership.

In midfield Jordan Henderson tried without much success, while Steven Gerrard was arguably Liverpool's best performer, though he looks in desperate need of a rest.

Raheem Sterling had probably his worst game of the season, while Philippe Coutinho and Lazar Markovic too often drifted in and out of the game.
