Berlusconi closes Milan's chequebook for summer

The Milan owner, Silvio Berlusconi, has confirmed the club will not be signing any more players this summer. The Rossoneri have brought in four new faces during pre-season, with the arrivals of Thiago Silva from Fluminense, Oguchi Onyewu from Standard Liège, Flavio Roma from Monaco and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from Real Madrid.

"Our market is closed," Berlusconi said yesterday. "Milan will have to find the strength to win with the players it has." Milan, who beat Juventus on penalties after a 1-1 draw to claim the Luigi Berlusconi trophy on Monday night, begin the Serie A season at Siena on Saturday.

The Internazionale midfielder Esteban Cambiasso has undergone knee surgery and will be out of action for at least a month, the club have confirmed. Cambiasso had an operation yesterday in Pavia on a meniscus injury sustained during Friday's Trofeo Tim match against Juventus.

A statement from the club read: "The Nerazzurri midfielder is well and, after several days of rest, he will begin rehabilitation." The Argentina international scored four goals in 35 Serie A appearances to help Inter clinch the scudetto last season.

St-Etienne have opened talks with free agent Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, the club's sporting director, Damien Comolli, has confirmed. The Dutch striker's contract at Celtic expired in the summer so he is available on a free transfer. "We have met the player," Comolli said.

"We are going to see what happens. The two parties must still come to a decision but it's going to be very complicated."

Les Verts, who are bottom of Ligue 1 after two rounds of fixtures, have been on the lookout for a striker since they sold Bafétimbi Gomis to Lyons for €13m (£11.1m).
