From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY have had a club record pounds 5m bid accepted for Real Mallorca striker Dani - but they face a fight for his signature in the summer.

The Wednesday manager, Danny Wilson, is determined his side will become a force in the Premiership next season and is prepared to break the bank to do so. Wilson has been searching for a new forward all season, finally bringing in promising England Under-21 international Richard Cresswell from York for pounds 1m before Thursday's deadline.

But Wilson wants quality to boost his side's bid for honours and avoid another relegation battle like the one they are currently being sucked into. It is believed Dani already has a provisional agreement to join Atletico Madrid in the summer but Wilson is determined to fight the Spanish giants all the way. Wednesday may also face a battle for his signature with Arsenal, who had a pounds 5m bid rejected just two months agowhen Mallorca were in the running for the Primera Liga.

At that time Dani insisted he would remain with the Balearic island side, who are fading from the title race, until the summer.

Wednesday's current club record stands at pounds 4.5million for Paolo Di Canio.

Benfica dismissed press reports yesterday that the club were seeking a replacement for their embattled coach, Graeme Souness. "Souness is the coach of Benfica and will remain as coach of Benfica," said Martin Cabral, a club spokesman. He said the former Liverpool and Scotland midfielder, who joined Benfica in November 1997, had a contract until June 2000.

Portuguese newspapers reported that Benfica were seeking a new coach after a series of poor results, notably a humiliating 3-0 home defeat by Boavista earlier this month. "On his way out", read the headline in The Record, with a photograph of Souness walking through an exit door.

Darren Jackson has completed his protracted switch from Celtic to Hearts for a fee of pounds 300,000.
