From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

GEORGE GRAHAM yesterday continued his rebuilding work at Tottenham by signing Sunderland's unsettled England Under-21 striker Michael Bridges in a deal which could exceed pounds 5m.

The transfer is subject to the 20-year-old passing a medical and agreeing personal terms. The Sunderland chairman, Bob Murray, said: "Quite simply, we feel Michael no longer wants to play for us."

Another player seemingly anxious to ply his trade elsewhere is Eyal Berkovic. West Ham United have confirmed that a pounds 5.5m offer has been agreed with Celtic which will take the Israeli midfielder to Parkhead. On completion of a medical and personal terms being confirmed, he should become Celtic's record signing some time in the next 48 hours.

The pounds 5.5m figure breaks the previous Celtic transfer record of pounds 4.5m paid to Bolton for Alan Stubbs in July 1996. It takes John Barnes' spending since taking over at Parkhead to pounds 8.75m following the signings of the defenders Stilian Petrov and Olivier Tebily.

Marco Materazzi, mooted as a possible West Ham capture, has left Everton and will sign for his former club, Italy's Perugia, for pounds 3m. His erstwhile team-mate Slaven Bilic, once a Hammer, will also be leaving, although his destination is not known. Everton have put Bilic on the transfer list.

Michael Branch, a product of Everton's youth scheme, may also leave. Portsmouth have offered pounds 750,000 for the striker.

Deportivo La Coruna's Moroccan international Mustapha Hadji is preparing to join Coventry City, according to the player's agent. Lucidio Ribeiro met Deportivo and Coventry officials in Spain this week to discuss the possible transfer of the midfielder, Africa's player of the year in 1998.

The Wimbledon manager Egil Olsen continued his clear-out of the Dons' old guard by removing the first-team coach, David Kemp. Olsen has already sold the defender Chris Perry to Tottenham for pounds 4m and Manchester City yesterday completed the signing of the 23-year-old Republic of Ireland winger, Mark Kennedy.
