Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

RONALDO missed a penalty as Internazionale lost 1-0 against Parma and let Juventus extend their lead in the Italian league. The Argentinian striker Hernan Crespo kept Parma's Champions' League hopes alive with a 77th-minute winner.

Inter had a goal disallowed in the 35th minute, when another Argentinian, Diego Simeone, was judged to have fouled Mario Stanic before nodding the ball home. Their bad luck continued in the 67th minute, when Parma's Brazilian defender, Ze Maria, brought down his compatriot Ronaldo, but the Inter striker saw his penalty saved by 20-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Juve could only scrape a 1-1 draw against Udinese after Alessandro Del Piero scored a superb solo equaliser in the 89th minute. Earlier, Olivier Bierhoff's dive had distracted Angelo Peruzzi and the Juve goalkeeper had let Jonathan Bachini's effort slip past him to give Udinese the lead.

Fiorentina struggled to get a 1-1 draw with lowly Piacenza in a game which saw both goals scored from the penalty spot. Davide Dionigi, offloaded by Fiorentina earlier in the season, took his revenge by winning and then converting a 26th spot-kick minute for Piacenza, but Domenico Morfeo converted a penalty in the 72nd minute to earn Fiorentina a point.

Two players familiar in this country put their names on the scoresheet as Bari beat Empoli 2-0, Phil Masinga and Klas Ingesson claimed the goals.

In the Netherlands, PSV Eindhoven made up a little ground on the league leaders, Ajax, with a 1-0 win at Utrecht yesterday. Ajax's match at Twente Enschede was postponed.
