Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

KEVIN KEEGAN'S wide-ranging search for an imposing centre-half to bolster Newcastle's occasionally brittle defence appears at an end. Darren Peacock, the QPR stopper, travelled to Tyneside yesterday and is expected to sign today for a pounds 2.75m fee - a record for a British defender, writes Henry Winter.

The 26-year-old, whose valuation fractionally supercedes the pounds 2.7m Sheffield Wednesday paid Sampdoria for Des Walker, impressed Keegan in two displays against Andy Cole this season. The Newcastle manager also drafted in (Glasgow) Rangers' promising 23-year- old centre-half, Brian Reid, on loan until the end of the season. If Reid, formerly of Renfrew Waverley and Morton, prospers - as is expected - a pounds 500,000 deal is on the table.

Their arrival is well-timed: Barry Venison sustained a suspected fractured cheekbone during last night's 2-0 win over Ipswich Town. Robbie Elliott was also injured, and may be missing for six months with medial- ligament trouble.

Anders Limpar, Arsenal's mercurial Swedish winger, is expected to end his Highbury hibernation today by joining either Manchester City or Everton in a pounds 1.6m move. 'Anders needs a new challenge,' George Graham, the Arsenal manager, said. 'He is one of the most talented players I have coached but he has not been able to transfer that ability to the pitch on a regular basis.'

Steve Morrow may also follow Limpar down Avenell Road before today's 5pm transfer deadline. Swindon Town have expressed interest in the Northern Ireland midfielder Arsenal value at pounds 750,000. Jimmy Carter, Arsenal's winger, did leave, on loan to Oxford United for the rest of the season.

Oxford had expected to generate pounds 1m by selling their highly-rated

23-year-old winger, Joey Beauchamp, to West Ham but yesterday the player failed to agree terms.

Paul Gascoigne burst into tears after shouting abuse during Lazio training yesterday. Following the incident Gascoigne was taken to one side by Lazio's coach, Dino Zoff, and comforted in a 20-minute heart-to- heart discussion. 'He is a very sensitive boy,' Zoff, the former Italian World Cup-winning captain, said. 'When I spoke to him he said: 'Boss, I want to achieve what you have achieved. I want to win'.'
