Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

You can vote your favourite among today's players into a special category of Future Hall Of Famers. Shearer, Beckham, Wright, Seaman, Zola, Fowler, Ronaldo ... there are plenty to choose from. In the table below, we have listed 200 players who could all be in contention. To make your selection, all you have to do is select your choice of up to four players. If you wish you may select only one, but four is the maximum. Make your selections, noting down their code numbers and then call 0930 565 986. First of all, you will be asked to carry out a quick test to determine what type of phone you have. You will then be directed to enter your chosen player codes. At the end of the call, you will be asked to leave your name and address. Your votes will be registered against your name.

A Mecca for every supporter

A MECCA for supporters throughout the world: that is the exciting concept of the International Football Hall Of Fame. There is no sport which unites people like football, but to date there is no place where those followers can celebrate their all-time heroes and relive the game's most memorable moments. Until now, that is.

Manchester, one of the sport's most famous hotbeds, will be the home of the International Football Hall Of Fame. In 1998, an exciting new visitor attraction - operated by Granada Entertainments - will open its doors. It will not only be a place that pays homage to the rich history of football, but will also transport visitors into the middle of the game through revolutionary and exhilarating interactive experiences and futuristic rides.

Here are just a sample of the many exciting experiences...

The Hall of Fame

At the heart of the concept is the Hall Of Fame, a cathedral of football. Huge, embracing bronze arms, on which are etched all the names of the Hall Of Famers, curve around a giant, revolving globe displaying images of the all-time greats.

The Hope and Glory Road

Football through the ages is presented as a walk to the ground on match day. A traditional turnstile entrance sets a warm, nostalgic atmosphere and at the far end of the walk, stadium-style seating and a large video wall allow visitors to enjoy favourite historic moments.

Skykick: The Ride

Climb aboard and sit in gleaming, ball-shaped globes as you travel around the leisure attractions, taking in all the spectacular sights - before being hurtled into a heart-pumping, thrill- ride finale.

The Match

A three-dimensional audio-visual event - a sensation for adults and children alike. Entering this 360-degree experience, you feel as though you're actually on the turf at Wembley or Hampden Park.

Total Control: Activities Area

A variety of interactive games test your mental and physical abilities, whatever your age or footballing skill ... and you can play solo or in a team. In "Take A Penalty", for example, you actually have the chance to pit your wits and try to score against your favourite goalkeeper. "Free Kick" sees

Pick your team of legends and win pounds 1,500 Call 0930 565 976

WE have devised an exciting competition to kick off the International Football Hall Of Fame. Just imagine compiling the all-time great players from the past 50 years and creating your own "dream team".

Well, by simply doing that you can scoop all - or a share - of the pounds 1,500 up for the taking in our easy-to-enter competition. The Hall Of Fame players' list on the left gives you 250 star names. You must select: one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and threeforwards. Sorry, but you may select your team only from the players listed.

At the end of the Hall Of Fame's registration period on 9 November, we will add up the total number of times each player was selected in the competition. We will take the most selected goalkeeper, the top four defenders, the top three midfielders and the leading three forwards. This will give us the 11 players in the "Greatest Team Ever" according to Independent On Sunday readers.

It couldn't be easier - or could it? Banks in goal or the great Italian keeper Dino Zoff? Cruyff or Pele? It's down to you. If your team matches the "Greatest Team Ever" then you're on a winner.

To enter your team, all you have to do is select your 11 players, making a note of their names and code numbers in the box provided on the left. For a tie breaker, also select the player you think will come second (because we think Pele will come first). Then call the number above.

You will be asked to enter 12 code numbers (11 for your team plus your tie-break player). Then leave your dream team's name and your name and address. At the end of the call, you will be given an eight-digit PIN number, which is your record of registration. The call should last no more than six minutes. When entering your selections, we recommend you use a touch-tone telephone, although a pulse phone can be used. If you have trouble, call our helpline: 0990 800 282.

The Rules

1: Only entries made on Independent/Independent On Sunday phone lines will be valid.

2: Entries must comprise a goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders, three strikers and a tie-break player from the list provided on the left.

3: The winner will be the reader whose team matches the 11 most popular players in their different positions as selected by Independent readers. If there is more than one winner, there will be a tie break, where callers have selected the player they believe will be the second most selected player from the list (second because we believe Pele will be the first). If there is still no outright winner, the prize will be shared. If there is no reader who successfully selects the 11 players, the process will work as above with those who selected 10 correctly and so on.

4: Team selections once made cannot be altered. There is no limit to the number of entries any person or household may make by individual entry. One PIN claim number will be issued for each valid team registration. Registration closes on 9 November, 1997.

5: Entries only from the UK and Eire. Entrants under 18 must get permission from the person who pays the telephone bill.

6: Inaudible, incomplete, incorrect entries or those considered obscene will not be accepted.

7: Employees of Newspaper Publishing, TIM and Europrint are not allowed to enter. Normal Newspaper Publishing rules apply.

8: Calls cost 50p per minute at all times. Entries made by a payphone will cost approximately double those made on a normal phone. Calls should last six minutes. The Republic of Ireland number is 1550 123 307 (Tone phones only - calls cost 58p per minute inc.VAT).
