Feb 1997 Paul Kitson sold to West Ham for pounds 2.3m.

Mar 1997 Monaco dump Dalglish's side out of the Uefa Cup, Liverpool beat them at Anfield 4-3 for second year running and David Ginola hands in a transfer request.

Jun 1997 Dalglish sells Lee Clark to Sunderland and buys unknown Georgian Temur Ketsbaia and Dane Jon Dahl Tomasson.

July 1997 Alan Shearer breaks his ankle in a pre-season friendly and is out for six months. Unfortunately for Dalglish, he had just sold his replacement, Les Ferdinand, to Spurs for pounds 6m.

Aug 1997 Newcastle tagged Dad's Army as Dalglish brings in trio of veterans: John Barnes, Ian Rush and Stuart Pearce.

Nov 1997 Knocked out of Europe at group stage despite 3-2 win against Barcelona.

Dec 1997 Title chances disappear with defeats by Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.

Jan 1998 Dalglish accused of bully-boy tactics when he asks for FA Cup- tie at Stevenage to be played at St James' Park. Newcastle need a replay to beat the non-League side.

Mar 1998 Dalglish pays pounds 2m for Greek international defender Nikos Dabizas. Reports claim Shearer hit Keith Gillespie in a Dublin bar. Just two wins in 14 league games drops United into relegation trouble. Chairman Freddy Shepherd and deputy Douglas Hall resign after sordid newspaper revelations about their private life.

April 1998 FA Cup semi-final victory over Sheffield United - Newcastle's first Cup Final for 24 years.

May 1998 Dalglish's side finish four points clear of relegation. Shearer cleared by FA of kicking Leicester player Neil Lennon in the face. Dalglish criticised for negative tactics after 2-0 FA Cup final defeat by Arsenal.

July 1998 Dalglish fury at criticism of new striker Stephane Guivarc'h in World Cup. He slams as "garbage" reports that Shearer is unhappy and will be sold. Shepherd and Hall back on board. Newcastle quoted at 33- 1 to be relegated.

Aug 1998 Newcastle booed off after opening day goalless draw with Charlton. After just two matches, Dalglish is fired.
