NIGEL CLOUGH was unable to inspire his Burton Albion side to reach the second round of the FA Cup at Rochdale last night. Clive Platt, Jason Peake and Julian Dowe's first goal for his club secured a 3-0 victory for the Third Division side in last night's first-round replay at Spotland and earned a trip to meet the winners of tonight's replay between Kettering and Wrexham in the next round.

Bury survived a scare at the hands of another Dr Martens League side, Tamworth, to set up a home tie against Cardiff City with a 2-1 extra-time victory. Warren Haughton had given the non-League team a 15th-minute lead and Bury left it until four minutes from full-time to equalise through Chris Billy, before Lutel James hit the winner five minutes into the additional period.

Cardiff booked their passage despite falling behind after just two minutes at home to Leyton Orient. Dean Smith fired the Nationwide League's bottom club ahead but the Welsh club hit back to run out 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Matt Brazier, Russell Perrett and Kevin Nugent.

Paul McGregor's second goal of the night with eight minutes of extra time remaining earned Plymouth Argyle a 2-1 win at home to Brentford. Robert Quinn's 82nd-minute volley for the Bees had forced the additional period, after McGregor had fired the Devon side in front in the 67th minute. The Pilgrims earned a home tie against Brighton, who beat Peterborough 3-0.
