Steve Sampson has signed a multi-year contract as the full-time head coach of the US national team.

Miguel Mejia Baron, the Mexico coach, was sacked on Wednesday following a run of dismal performances.

A transfer wrangle which threatened to prevent Heiko Herrlich, the Borussia Monchengladbach striker, joining Borussia Dortmund, has been resolved. The exact transfer fee has not been disclosed, but is thought to be in the region of DM9m (pounds 4.2m).

Japan has rejected the idea of co-hosting the 2002 World Cup finals with neighbouring South Korea, saying it could cause trouble. South Korea and Japan are the only candidates vying to host the 2002 World Cup.
