Faldo flounders
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Nick Faldo, of Britain, was six shots off the pace after the first round of the Buick Invitational at La Jolla, California. Faldo shot a one-under-par 71 as five players tied for the lead on the opening day.
Phil Mickelson, the 1993 winner of the event, fired a seven-under 65 and shares the leadership with Joel Edwards, Dan Pohl, Chris DiMarco and Jerry Haas. Craig Stadler, the defending champion, is in a group of 10 golfers two strokes back on 67. Ireland's David Feherty started well with a fine 69.
Haas had seven birdies and Pohl five birdies plus an eagle at the par- five 18th. Edwards' iron play was among the best in the field on Thursday, with all six of his birdie putts set up by approach shots within five feet of the cup. Peter Jacobsen, the winner of the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am last week, shot a 68.
Mickleson said: "I've played so well here in the past. I played well again today. I made some good six to eight-footers. The scores are going to be low because the fairways and greens are immaculate."
