EUROPEAN FOOTBALL ROUND-UP: Brilliant Bebeto bags five goals
The Brazilian striker, Bebeto, hit all five goals in Deportivo La Coruna's 5-0 Spanish League win over Albacete - including four in the last six minutes. He now has eight goals in five games for the season.
Barcelona had Sergi Barjuan sent off in the first half but still came from behind to hold Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw in the Bernabeu, leaving the home side, the reigning champions, in the bottom half of the table with just five points from five matches. The other Barcelona side, Espanol, lead the table with a 100 per cent record.
Second-placed PSV Eindhoven, helped by an impressive performance from their Brazilian striker Ronaldo, outclassed Feyenoord 3-0 last night in a Dutch League game that matched two teams who face English opposition later this month - PSV play Leeds in the Uefa Cup while Feyenoord were drawn against Everton in the Cup-Winners' Cup.
All the goals came in the second half. Ronaldo controlled a 50-yard pass from Wim Jonk on his chest before pushing the ball through the goalkeeper's legs. Seconds after the Feyenoord defender, Rob Witschge, hit the bar with a shot from 25 yards, Jonk scored from a slick pass from Luc Nilis. Just before full-time Ronaldo set up the defender, Chris van der Weerden, to make it 3-0 with a low drive.
Ajax enjoyed their seventh straight win, 4-0 at Heerenveen, and remain top of the table, with 27 goals for and, astonishingly, none against.
