ENGLAND'S YOUNG GUNS: AUSSIES OR POMS?

ANDREW SYMONDS

Born in Birmingham, 9 June 1975. Adopted and taken to Australia in 1977. Joined Australian Cricket Academy in 1993. Played for Queensland and for Australia Under-19 on 1994 tour of India. Century for Queensland against England. Moved to England in 1995. Scored 161 not out against Surrey on first-class debut for Gloucestershire. Hit world record 20 sixes against Glamorgan last month.

JASON GALLIAN

Born in Manly, New South Wales, 25 June 1971. Parents had emigrated from Cheadle in 1964. Represented Manly and New South Wales and captained Australia Under-19. Moved to England in 1990 to begin four-year qualification by residence. Played in Lancashire 2nd XI 1990 and 1991. First-class debut in 1992 for Oxford University. Played in two Tests this summer.

MARTIN McCAGUE

Born in Larne, Northern Ireland, 24 May 1969. Brought up in Port Headland, Western Australia. Attended Australian Cricket Academy. Represented Western Australia 11 times between 1990 and 1992. Recruited for Kent in 1991 by former WA manager Daryll Foster. Did not play first-grade cricket until 18 after playing Australian Rules football at school. Played in two Tests in 1993.

CRAIG WHITE

Born in Morley, West Yorkshire, 16 December 1969. Brought up in Bendigo, Victoria, from age seven. Attended the Victoria Cricket Academy and the Australian Cricket Academy in Adelaide. Represented Australian Young Cricketers in the West Indies 1989-90. Made first-class debuts for Yorkshire and Victoria in 1990. Father played for Pudsey St Lawrence. Played in four Tests in 1994 and two this year.
