England's last hope of a place in Saturday's World Championship final ended in Birmingham yesterday after South Africa beat Trinidad 58-49. Only victory by Trinidad could have kept the home side in contention for the gold medal.
England, who beat Malawi 68-45 yesterday, need a victory against Trinidad today to ensure a place in Friday's third place play-off against New Zealand.
After criticism of this year's tournament, the International Federation of Associations have announced changes for the 1999 championship in New Zealand. Instead of 27 teams, there will be a limit of 16, with two semi-finals and a final rather than this year's group system.
