England accept French offer
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.England will play in a four-nation tournament against France, Italy and probably Brazil in the run-up to the 1998 World Cup.
An invitation from the French football federation to play in the event in the summer of 1997 has been accepted by the Football Association even though England will meet Italy in their final World Cup qualifier in Rome the following October.
The event will use Parc des Princes in Paris and the stadiums in Lens, Nantes, Lyon and Montepellier which will be used in the finals.
The draw for the finals will be staged in December next year at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille. All previous World Cup draws had been held indoors but the French want to do something different to allow fans and children to take part. The draw for the 32 finalists would be held either before or during an extended half-time of a big match.
