Sutton's feat, which also equals the Lancashire record for all first-class matches, denied Yorkshire a batting bonus point as Oliver Newby found the edge of 19-year-old Ben Sanderson's bat. But given that the home side had already pocketed four, it was something of a hollow victory.
All out for 395, Yorkshire's total somewhat exceeded what Sutton had in mind when he invited the home side to bat yesterday. Having watched his team bowled out for 89 when he decided to bat first in the Friends Provident Trophy last Wednesday, Sutton's stint as stand-in captain for the injured Stuart Law is not going well.
To make matters worse, the three overs possible before lunch in Lancashire's reply have already cost them the wicket of Iain Sutcliffe, trapped in front by Tim Bresnan to his third ball.
It capped a brilliant morning for Bresnan, whose unbeaten 64 was the key to Yorkshire's advance from 306-7 overnight. The 23-year-old all-rounder's 135-ball innings included some streaky strokes but some classy ones too. He picked up seven boundaries.
Saj Mahmood bowled well without adding to his four wickets yesterday and Gary Keedy, the ever-willing left-arm spinner, flighted the ball nicely and claimed Richard Pyrah's wicket with the help of Dominic Cork's fine catch at slip. But it was Yorkshire's morning by some distance.
Sutton, incidentally, equalled the Lancashire record held jointly by Bill Farrimond (seven against Kent at Old Trafford in 1930) and Warren Hegg (seven against Derbyshire at Chesterfield in 1989). Yorkshiremen Jimmy Binks and David Bairstow previously shared the Roses record of six catches in an innings.
