Jayasuriya hits back to silence critics

Jayasuriya smashed a century as Sri Lanka made 309 for 7 from their 50 overs. Australia were then dismissed for 258 to give Sri Lanka a 51-run win against the world champions.

Jayasuriya, the 36-year-old veteran of Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup-winning teamwhose place in the national side has come under threat in recent months, made 114 off 96 balls, crashing 10 fours and four sixes.

After losing his opening partner Jehan Mubarak (2) with the score on 24, Jayasuriya was joined by Kumar Sangakkara and the pair put on 163 in only 24.5 overs. Jayasuriya was finally dismissed when stumped by the wicketkeeper Brad Haddin going for another big hit off the supersub Brad Hogg.

Australia never looked likely to threaten the Sri Lanka total. James Hopes showed defiance in a ninth-wicket partnership with Hogg worth 60. But in the final over his resistance ended on 43, hitting out to Vaas on the boundary off the bowling of Bandara, who took 4 for 58.
