The all-rounder converted his overnight 171 into an unbeaten 205 as Sussex reached 644 in their first innings, a lead of 344. Two early wickets for left-arm swing bowler Jason Lewry helped Sussex press home the advantage as Somerset were removed for 373.
A batting collapse by Northamptonshire at New Road gifted Worcestershire an unlikely eight-wicket win. The visitors were skittled out for 77 in 35.3 overs and an unbeaten 36 from the home captain Graeme Hick saw Worcestershire to the 82 needed for victory.
At Cheltenham, Craig Spearman helped Gloucestershire to a 207-run lead against Glamorgan. The New Zealander was undefeated on 125 as Gloucestershire moved onto 184 for 5 in their second innings.
