Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

With the Yorkshire captain David Byas calling the County Championship title chase a "two-horse race", Surrey will be aiming to pull clear of the Tykes in the final furlong with a win over lowly Derbyshire at The Oval today.

With the Yorkshire captain David Byas calling the County Championship title chase a "two-horse race", Surrey will be aiming to pull clear of the Tykes in the final furlong with a win over lowly Derbyshire at The Oval today.

However, the Surrey cricket manager Keith Medlycott is wary of Derbyshire, one of only two sides to beat them in the Championship this season. "With four games to go we've got to make sure we maintain our form," he said.

The only change for the hosts sees Ben Hollioake dropped for Gary Butcher, while Derbyshire, with captain Dominic Cork playing for England, recall Lian Wharton and the 17-year-old Zubair Khan to their 12-man squad.

Byas is hoping to keep up the pressure with a win against Leicestershire at Grace Road. "We're treating this as a massive game," he said. "It's basically a two-horse race now, although Lancashire could feature if ourselves and Surrey slip up."

Byas is injured so Matthew Wood deputises and Yorkshire's impressive stock of fast bowlers is massively depleted with Darren Gough, Matthew Hoggard and Craig White on England duty, while Paul Hutchison and Ryan Sidebottom are definitely out injured and Chris Silverwood had a scan on his inflamed knee yesterday.

Leicestershire have a fully-fit squad to choose from, with Jon Dakin, Phil DeFreitas and Anil Kumble all returning to the 13-man squad.

Durham, desperate for a win against Somerset to pull them clear of the bottom three in the First Division, are without Nicky Peng and Graeme Bridge, who are playing for the England Under-19 XI. Michael Gough and Jimmy Daley take their places and Steve Harmison returns to the 12-man squad for Ian Hunter.

Somerset, already missing Andy Caddick and Marcus Trescothick with the full England side and Peter Trego with the juniors, find that Piran Holloway is also ruled out. Michael Burns and Adrian Pierson come into the side.
