Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Michael Vaughan, not exactly awash with England runs of late, got his Yorkshire season off to the worst possible start yesterday, falling for a duck against the might of Bradford/ Leeds University at Headingley. With the Test series against New Zealand starting in a month the captain needs some big scores to breed confidence but while his team-mates amassed 384 for 6, Vaughan lasted just six balls.
Rob Key and Owais Shah, two batsmen also eager to make England runs this summer, fared slightly better yesterday. Darren Pattinson took 5 for 22 as Nottinghamshire dismissed Kent for 162 in the First Division at Canterbury. A knock of 79 off 163 balls from Key was Kent's saving grace. Notts were 121 for 3 in reply at the close of play.
In the Second Division, Shah hit a century as Middlesex started strongly against Leicestershire at Grace Road. Shah fired 116, with 16 fours and one six, in a first-day tally of 257 for 5.
Worcestershire were bowled out for 249 by neighbours Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
