Sent back to county cricket along with the rest of the England side following the drawn first Test with Sri Lanka, Caddick took 5 for 66 as Somerset took charge against Surrey in the First Division match at The Oval.
Only Ian Ward could lend any stability to the home innings with an untroubled 62 as his side were bowled out for 220. Somerset were 10 without loss at the close. Surrey made a poor start, losing Mark Butcher to the third ball of the day and Mark Ramprakash to the eighth.
Leicestershire captain Vince Wells ended the day unbeaten on 85 as his side posted 257 for 7 against Sussex at Horsham. Opener Trevor Ward got the innings off to a solid start once the rain relented with 48 before he became one of Robin Martin-Jenkins' four victims.
In the Second Division, Durham made an impressive start in their match with Gloucestershire at the Riverside. Martin Love was again in the runs, top-scoring with 78 and Gary Pratt made 66 as Durham reached 238 for 3. Paul Collingwood was unbeaten on 47 at stumps.
In the other championship game, Tony Penberthy provided the backbone of Northamptonshire's innings as they managed 249 for 9 against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. The all-rounder held his side's innings together and was still there at the close on 83 not out.
In the third round of the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy, the Essex captain Ronnie Irani led his side to victory as they chased a daunting 291 for 5 set by Middlesex. Sven Koenig proved the mainstay of Middlesex's innings, taking just 102 balls to notch up his fourth century of the season.
However, Irani's unbeaten 86 and Nasser Hussain's superb 96 saw Essex pass their target with five wickets and almost two overs to spare to set up a fourth-round meeting with Lancashire.
* The second day of the tour match between Sri Lanka and Glamorgan fell victim to the weather without a ball being bowled at Cardiff.
