From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Ashley Giles is returning from England's Ashes tour of Australia to be with his wife Stine, who is suffering from a potentially serious illness.

The Warwickshire left-arm spinner will be replaced in England's Ashes Test squad by Middlesex off-spinner Jamie Dalrymple, currently in Australia with the ECB National Academy squad.

England head coach Duncan Fletcher said: "This is very distressing news for Ashley, and the thoughts of all the players and management are with him and Stine at such a difficult time.

"It is typical of Ashley that he has dealt with this in such a professional manner, and we wish Stine a speedy recovery."

Fletcher told Sky Sports that he heard first from Giles on day one of the ongoing third Test in Perth that he was concerned about his wife.

"A couple of days ago, he came to me and told me about it," said the coach.

"He got the plane home this morning. As always, he has been very professional."

Fletcher also confirmed Dalrymple has been summoned to cover for Giles, who was dropped from the team at the WACA in favour of Monty Panesar.

"We have called up Jamie Dalrymple, and he will join us for the Melbourne leg."
