From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

SOUTH AFRICA yesterday sent West Indies spinning to yet another defeat, winning the fifth one-day international by 89 runs to take a winning 4-1 lead in the seven-match series. West Indies, defeated 5-0 in the Tests, were dismissed for a paltry 132 in reply to 221 for 8. Their last nine wickets fell for just 65.

Hansie Cronje took three for 10 in his 100th one-day match as South Africa captain.

South Africa had looked to be in trouble at 68 for 6 after winning the toss, but their lower-order batting rescued them. Dale Benkenstein, the No 7, anchored the recovery with a career-best 69.

He shared a 62-run partnership with the No 8 Mark Boucher, who hit 34, before Lance Klusener, the No 9, launched an assault. Klusener raced to an undefeated 54 in 36 balls - including three sixes and two fours - as he and Benkenstein added 91 in the last 10 overs. Nixon McLean was the pick of the West Indian bowlers, removing the first three batsmen before finishing with three for 41.

Only Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who scored 40, appeared to have the stomach for a run chase. But once the opener was fourth out with the score on 82, West Indies simply fell apart.
