Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The 1995 world canoe slalom championships are to be held at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, the venue this weekend for the second international event of the domestic season. Most of the British team, including the world men's kayak champion, Shaun Pearce, and the consistent Richard Fox MBE, the four-times previous champion, will use the event to prepare for the world championships, which will be held this year in northern Italy in July. Four categories comprise slalom racing. In men's and women's kayak the paddlers sit and in the Canadian singles and doubles the canoeists kneel as they contest the 600m artificial course, fed by the River Trent. Individuals compete tomorrow, with the team event and an exciting slalom sprint on Sunday.

How to get there: National Water Sports Centre, Adbolton Lane, Holme Pierrepont is three miles east of Nottingham on A52. Admission to country park pounds 1 per car each day. Racing from noon-5pm tomorrow and on Sunday from 10am-3.30pm. (Tel: 0602- 821212).
