Water torture
Fresh thunderstorms rumbled through the American Midwest, feeding swollen rivers and straining embankments. Armies of volunteers worked to pile sandbags around homes and shops along the Mississippi in preparation for a record crest downstream near St Louis. City and federal officials kept a close eye on a levee which protects the city of St Louis and threatened to collapse.
