From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Israel will not be deterred from launching further attacks on Syria, a senior government official has told the New York Times, warning that Bashar al-Assad would forfeit his presidency if he retaliated.
Israel has long said that it is willing to act to prevent sophisticated weapons falling into the hands of its long-standing enemy, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and two weeks ago launched at least three attacks on Syria. Officials have both publicly and privately insisted that Israel is not taking sides in the Syrian civil war.
"Israel is determined to continue to prevent the transfer of advanced weapons to Hezbollah," the Israeli official told the newspaper. "The transfer of such weapons to Hezbollah will destabilize and endanger the entire region. If Syrian President Assad reacts by attacking Israel, or tries to strike Israel through his terrorist proxies he will risk forfeiting his regime, for Israel will retaliate."
