'At least 22 killed' following bombing of rebel-held area of Aleppo

A video of a young child injured in strikes by Syrian government forces on Aleppo has emerged following an alleged chlorine bombing in the city.

According to rescue workers, barrel bombs containing the chemical were dropped on the rebel-held As-Sukkari area of the city.

More than 80 people have reportedly been injured including 37 children who were treated for breathing difficulties. At least 10 patients are said to be in a critical state, including a pregnant woman.

The use of chlorine in the attacks is yet to be verified. A UN-led inquiry last month found the Syrian government had used chlorine in attacks on at least two occasions.

Both the Syrian government and opposition leaders have denied the use of chemical weapons in the civil war which is now in its fifth year.

Volunteer emergency rescue organisation the Syria Civil Defence, which is also known as the White Helmets, posted videos on its Facebook page showing children using oxygen masks to breath.

The group said more than 200 bombs were dropped on Aleppo in 24 hours.

Dutch journalist Sakir Khader, who posted the video of the injured child to Twitter, said the death toll from government air strikes on As-Sukkari is now thought to be “at least 22”.
