TOKYO (AFP) - Prosecutors yesterday began questioning the former political kingmaker, Shin Kanemaru, who was arrested overnight on suspicion of large- scale tax evasion.
Investigators indicated that Mr Kanemaru, 78, until last year Japan's most influential politician, admitted evading 400m yen ( pounds 2.3m) in taxes on income of 800m yen earned in 1987 and 1989. Mr Kanemaru's former secretary, Masahisa Haibara, was also arrested on Saturday.
