A video has been released of the moment a team of commandos launched an assault to end the siege on a kosher supermarket in the east of Paris.

Explosions could be heard and flashes of light seen as the team of officers stormed the Hyper Cacher supermarket in the Paris suburb of Porte de Vincennes.

Following the assault, police confirmed that 32-year-old gunman Amedy Coulibaly had been killed during the police operation.

Earlier, French media had reported that an armed man entered the Jewish-run supermarket in the Paris suburb at around 1pm before taking several hostages.

During the siege, police announced that they were pursuing 32-year-old Amedy Coulibaly in connection with the Paris siege, as well as his 26-year-old girlfriend Hayat Boumedienne, 26.

The news of the death of Coulibaly came within moments of police reporting that Said Kouachi and Cherif Kouachi the chief suspects in the Charlie Hebdo killings had also been killed.
