People ordering pornography, including rape scenes, torture and paedophilia, were caught when they ordered via the dummy site.
The main ring was based in Russia but Italian authorities say there are users throughout the world, including in the UK.
More than 830 suspects have already been charged in what is one of the largest such operations in history.
The software giant Microsoft, and the FBI in the US, helped the Italian police and a team of 400 computer experts in the international effort.
The police also used computer viruses to interfere with websites offering child pornography.
