Outdoor heater sales are soaring in Spain as pavement cafés become a winter phenomenon after one of Europe's toughest smoking laws came into effect.

Madrileños are famous for living in the street on spring and summer evenings, strolling and packing outdoor cafés.

But a month after the new ban on indoor smoking began this winter, the terraces are full of coffee, beer and wine drinkers even when temperatures approach freezing.
