From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A British tourist drowned when his pedalo overturned in choppy seas off a beach at the resort of Ayia Napa in Cyprus.

Shaun Williams, 21, is believed to have struck his head when the craft capsized close to Nissi beach during a holiday with a group of friends.

Three friends on the boat managed to swim to the shore and raise the alarm. Helicopters and divers joined in the search on Thursday but Mr Williams' body was found three hours later on the seabed.

He was taken to the local police station where he was pronounced dead, the Foreign Office said. None of the men was believed to be wearing buoyancy aids.

A witness, who declined to be named, said: "The sea was really, really rough and the pedalo started rocking then flipped over. It looked as if one of them hit his head as it flipped. The helicopters came and they spent three hours looking for him before one of the divers found his body," he said.

First Choice Holidays, the tour operator which organised the trip, said it was in touch with the local authorities and was offering "every assistance" to Mr Williams' family and friends.
