Greek police confirmed they have arrested 18 British nationals suspected of being involved in a fight at a resort in Crete in which a Briton was stabbed to death.

A 19-year-old man is suspected of delivering the fatal blow, a police statement said. He is being detained in custody.

The unidentified victim, also 19, died on the way to a hospital after being stabbed in the chest.

The brawl at Malia, in northern Crete, took place before dawn and involved about 30 British nationals, the police statement said.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Malia, Greece, on 23 July. We stand ready to provide consular assistance to the family.”

He added: “We are aware of the arrests of a number of British nationals in Malia, Crete, on 23 July. We are in touch with the local authorities and stand ready to provide consular assistance.”

In May John Kittmer, the British ambassador to Greece launched a Holiday Hangover campaign to promote responsible behaviour among young British tourists.

The seaside resort has become a favorite destination for holiday makers, particularly young Britons who enjoy the Crete island night life.
