A riverboat collision with a barge in central Moscow killed at least five people and the death toll may rise to 10, Interfax news agency said today, citing an official investigating the accident.

The private boat carrying more than a dozen people sank in the Moscow River after it collided with the river barge at around 1 a.m. (2100 GMT).

"The bodies of five people have been brought to the surface, among them is the body of the captain," said Moscow Interregional Investigative Committee Chief Oleg Tushmalov, who said the death toll may rise to 10.

RIA reported that six people had been taken from the water and that one person swam to shore.

The accident is the latest in a string of transport disasters in Russia.
