A stain on a pavement that has been revered by Mexicans as resembling the Virgin of Guadalupe was moved above ground and blessed by clerics. Bearing flowers and candles, people queued to touch the shrine to Mexico's newest icon, the "Virgin of the Metro", which was discovered by a cleaner in the subway on 1 June. Thousands of visitors flocked to Hidalgo station, in Mexico City, to pay homage to what they swore was a miraculous image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the country's patron saint.
