From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Six policemen were killed when more than 100 militants attacked a police station in north-west Pakistan, an official said today.

Two of the police officers were beheaded.

Police spokesman Ishrat Yar said the attack near the city of Peshawar started late last night and triggered a gun battle which lasted for several hours.

The militants were armed with heavy machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, hand grenades and assault rifles.

Mr Yar said a further 12 policemen were injured in the attack in the small town of Matni, some 12 miles (20km) south of Peshawar.

One of those beheaded was a senior official who commanded several police stations in the area.

Mr Yar says the militants burned the police station and four police vehicles before escaping.
