The Pakistan government vowed yesterday to repatriate a scientist sentenced to life in prison in the US as hundreds of people protested against the ruling.

A judge sentenced Aafia Siddiqui to 86 years in prison on Thursday after she was convicted in May of shooting at FBI agents and soldiers in Afghanistan. Many in Pakistan believe Siddiqui, a 38-year-old neuroscientist, is innocent.

Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani said his government told parliament "no stone had been left unturned" to secure the return of the "daughter of the nation".
